Aikido Dentoukan

Aikido the “Way of Harmony” was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei). Aikido utilizes “Ki” (internal energy) and precise dynamic angles to throw an aggressor or complex joint locks to control an aggressor. Aikido is different from other martial arts as it does not focus on offensive techniques such as kicking and punching, but rather using an aggressor’s energy and movements to control the aggressor.

Aikido Dentoukan teaches Iwama style of Aikido originated from Iwama, Japan and as taught by Morihiro Saito Sensei (a direct student of O Sensei who spent the most time on the mat with the founder and the longest serving student of O Sensei). After O Sensei passed away in April 1969 Saito Sensei was placed in charge of the Iwama Dojo until his death in May 2002.

Aikido Dentoukan (Traditional School of Aikido) emphasize basic and fundamental training of taijitsu (open-handed technique), bokken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff). In order to really embrace and unleash true Aikido one must strengthen both body and skills over a long period of time to build confidence and above all to build a good solid foundation to advance from. We believe that whatever reasons a student is looking for within a martial art whether it is for self defense, increasing confidence or better physical health they can find it in practicing Aikido.

Our lineage derives from Michael Field Sensei (5 th Dan), Head Instructor of “Field Aikido” who was a direct student of Morihiro Saito Sensei and was honored by him in the year 2000 as the Head Instructor of Iwama Ryu Aikido Australia. Aikido Dentoukan look forward to continue the strong Iwama Ryu training passed onto us by Saito Sensei.
